How to Use an Exfoliating Glove (The Right Way)

Wildpier Deep Exfoliating Glove being used on the arm

If you have never used an exfoliating glove before, the first few times can feel like a mystery. Too gentle and nothing happens. Too rough and your skin ends up red and unhappy. The good news is that there is a right way to do it, and once you have the technique down, it takes about two minutes in the shower.

Here is exactly how to use an exfoliating glove so you get smoother skin without the irritation.

What an exfoliating glove actually does

An exfoliating glove is a physical (or "manual") exfoliator. Instead of using acids or grit, the textured fabric gently lifts away the layer of dead skin sitting on the surface. That is what leaves skin feeling softer and looking brighter.

Used regularly, a glove can help:

  • Smooth rough, dry patches on arms, legs, and elbows
  • Reduce the look of ingrown hairs after shaving or waxing
  • Help body oil and moisturizer absorb more evenly
  • Prep skin so self-tanner goes on smooth instead of patchy

The Wildpier Deep Exfoliating Glove is made from a plant-based fabric spun from reed plant fibre. It is hand-cut and hand-sewn, and it is 100% biodegradable.

Before you start: skip the soap

This is the part most people get wrong. You do not use soap or body wash with an exfoliating glove. The glove works on bare, wet skin. Soap creates slip, which stops the fabric from gripping the dead skin the way it is meant to.

So the order is: exfoliate first, then wash after if you want to.

How to use an exfoliating glove, step by step

Step 1: Soak first. Get in a warm (not hot) shower or bath and let your skin soften for at least 5 minutes. Warm water loosens the dead skin so the glove can do more with less pressure.

Step 2: Wet the glove, no soap. Slip on the glove and dampen it. Leave the body wash for later.

Step 3: Work in gentle circles. Move over one area at a time in small circular motions for about 30 to 60 seconds. Firm but light is the goal. You may see a little pilling on the skin. That is the dead skin lifting, exactly what should happen.

Step 4: Rinse. Rinse the loosened skin away. Wash with your usual body wash now if you like.

Step 5: Moisturize on damp skin. Pat dry and lock in moisture within a minute of getting out, while skin is still slightly damp. A few drops of body oil or a rich lotion works beautifully here.

How often should you use it?

For gloves, 1 to 2 times per week is the sweet spot. Exfoliating gloves are more effective than they look, and daily use can leave skin irritated rather than smooth. If you want something you can use more often, a konjac sponge is gentle enough for daily use.

Which intensity is right for you?

Not every glove should feel the same. Wildpier makes a range across three intensity levels so you can match the glove to your skin:

  • Deep: the Original and the Plus+ for the most thorough exfoliation.
  • Gentle: the Luxe, our pick for sensitive or reactive skin.
  • Gentlest: the Ultimate for the softest touch.

If your skin runs sensitive, start with the Luxe rather than the Original. You can always build up.

Looking after your glove

Rinse it well after each use and hang it somewhere it can dry fully between showers. Replace it every 8 to 10 weeks to keep the texture working its best.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using soap. It kills the grip. Bare, wet skin only.
  • Pressing too hard. More pressure does not mean better results. Let the fabric do the work.
  • Using it every day. Stick to 1 to 2 times a week.
  • Skipping moisturizer. Always follow up while skin is still damp.
  • Hot water. Warm is kinder to your skin.

The bottom line

An exfoliating glove is one of the simplest, most affordable ways to get smoother skin at home. No soap, gentle circles, once or twice a week, and always moisturize after. That is the whole routine.
